To the Editorial Team: My husband and I are two of the approximately 20.8 million Part B recipients to have received an email from President Trump about a “One-Time Payment of $90 to offset some of the cost” of our October Medicare premium.

The question isn’t why now. It’s obvious. The midterm elections are around the corner and the man-who-would-be-king is so afraid the Republicans will lose in November, that he’ll do anything to try to buy this election and avoid whatever consequences await him.

No, the question we have about our unexpected windfall is: why us?

Why should people in our income bracket — my husband and I are retired professionals with no debt — get a Medicare Part B refund? I’m sure there are seniors for whom an extra $90 will make a difference. But it’s hard to square this act of noblesse oblige when an estimated 4.9-12 million Americans have lost, or will lose, health care coverage because of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.”

As usual, Trump didn’t miss an opportunity to promote himself. His email message was the usual hodge-podge of lies, like how he’s created “massive” savings for us, the American people, all the while “rooting out the Waste, Fraud, and Abuse across our Healthcare System.”

My husband and I also care deeply about rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse. Which is why we will be donating our $180 Medicare Part B reimbursement to a worthy cause. If you’ve received a reimbursement, and you can afford to do so, we urge you to do the same. At the very least, when you cast your ballot in the midterm elections, don’t forget to consider all the waste, fraud, and abuse sanctioned by Trump — and every candidate too cowardly to call him out.
