To the Editorial Team: The midterm elections are almost upon us and there is nothing more urgent than getting out the message that in America we have no kings. Elections belong to the people. But our elections are under attack right now. Across the country, some leaders are working hard to undermine trust in our elections, weaken voting rights, and make it harder for people to have their voices heard.

That’s why in Kingston, along with hundreds of other communities around the country, we will be celebrating our right to vote (and vote early) with a peaceful, non-partisan, No Kings — Vote Early Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 12-4 pm on Franklin Street between Broadway and Prospect Street.

Why the emphasis on voting early? Because voting early gives eligible voters more opportunities to participate and make their voices heard. It gives people time to deal with problems that could otherwise keep them from voting on Election Day. Voting early also gives communities more time to help neighbors, friends, family members, and coworkers make their own plans to participate.

The No Kings — Vote Early Festival in Kingston will be a joyful celebration, featuring live music, local food vendors, plus activities for all ages. Come find information about how to use your power at the ballot box, and how you can help get out the vote (i.e., signing up to drive people to the polls; sending postcards; and joining a rapid response effort in the event that elections are sabotaged).

This free and open to the public event is sponsored by Indivisible Ulster, Harambee Kingston, League of Women Voters of the Mid-Hudson Region, The Center for Creative Education, and Indivisible Hurley/Woodstock/Olive Action.
