To the Editorial Team: We don’t have a problem with voter fraud in this country. We have a problem with voter participation. Even so, Trump’s Supreme Court apologists continue to hack off access for American voters, most recently with their decision to allow states to use the so-called “SAVE” system to hunt for ineligible voters.

Federal law should prohibit states from implementing the SAVE system before this year’s midterm (there isn’t enough time). And, going forward, there should be some relief in knowing that no state will be required to use this online system that newly combines citizenship information, Social Security numbers and other sensitive data. But some states will agree to use the SAVE system — a system already proven to be seriously flawed. And, in those states, American citizens will get purged from the voter rolls.

This should concern all of us, regardless of our partisan affiliation or where we live.

What can you do? Talk to everyone you know about why you care about voting. Share with them the urgency of holding onto this sacred right by exercising our power at the ballot box. Explain that voting early this year will help us to hold onto that right. Practice checking your voter registration and teach others to make sure they haven’t been purged.

Remind them that we, the people, get to choose our leaders and the future we want. Not kings, not dictators, not billionaires. That’s the message behind No Kings 4 on Saturday, Oct. 17. Join us at a gathering near you. There will be multiple celebrations in Ulster County.
