To the Editorial Team: The recent discussions surrounding the Reimagining Ulster Community College project have generated important conversations about the future of higher education in our region. While declining enrollment presents real challenges, any effort to reshape the college must begin with a clear understanding of the mission and purpose of community colleges.

Many of the ideas proposed during this process came from individuals with limited knowledge of the history, mission, and values that have guided community colleges for generations.

Community colleges were created to provide affordable, accessible educational opportunities, workforce development, and pathways to economic mobility for local residents. Any vision for the future must remain grounded in these core principles.

Having served as a community college president for many years, I have witnessed firsthand how innovation can strengthen an institution without abandoning its mission. Throughout my career, I helped develop creative programs designed to meet the changing needs of students and communities. Initiatives such as the President’s Challenge Scholarship, New Start for Women, and co-enrollment opportunities with four-year universities expanded access and created new pathways to success. These efforts succeeded because they were rooted in the fundamental purpose of community colleges while adapting to a changing environment.

Strong leadership is essential during times of uncertainty. Effective leaders understand both the community they serve and the mission they are entrusted to uphold. Their responsibility is to provide vision, inspire confidence, and build supportive teams capable of turning that vision into reality. Sustainable change occurs when innovation is balanced with respect for institutional purpose and community needs.

The Board of Trustees also plays an instrumental role in the success of any community college.

Trustees are responsible for ensuring that leadership remains focused on the institution’s mission while providing strategic direction and accountability. Equally important, they must help build consensus among stakeholders and foster a collaborative process that engages faculty, staff, students, alumni, business leaders, and community members. Lasting progress is achieved when decisions are informed by those who understand both the college’s history and its vital role in the community.

As we look to the future, partnerships must also evolve. For too long, educational planning has focused primarily on K–12 alignment. Today’s economy and workforce demands require us to think in terms of a K-16 continuum that seamlessly connects elementary and secondary education with community colleges and four-year institutions. Expanding these partnerships can strengthen college readiness, increase enrollment opportunities, improve transfer pathways, and better prepare students for careers and lifelong learning. Community colleges are uniquely positioned to serve as the bridge between secondary education and higher education, making K-16 collaboration essential to future success.

As Ulster Community College plans for the future, I encourage decision-makers to remember why community colleges were created and the critical role they continue to play. Reimagining the college should not mean abandoning its mission. Rather, it should mean finding new and innovative ways to fulfill that mission while preserving the values that have made community colleges one of the most effective and accessible institutions in American higher education.
