From the streets of Ulster County to the Oval Office. One county native could serve in President Joe Biden's administration if his nomination is confirmed.

The announcement dropped last Friday in a press release from the White House. Solomon Greene was nominated to work as the assistant secretary for policy development and research at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Manna Jo Greene, his mother and Ulster County legislator, was beyond proud.

"[Solomon] has dedicated his career to making sure that everyone has access to safe, affordable and stable housing, lifting barriers to economic opportunities, and strengthening the health and wellbeing of communities,” Manna Jo Greene said. “I know he is honored to be nominated and very much looking forward to working with the Senate on his confirmation hearing."

According to its website, HUD develops national policies and programs that address housing affordability, the development and improvement of communities and the creation of fair housing laws. Some of its primary programs include mortgage loans and assistance through the Federal Housing Administration, rental assistance for low-income households and fair housing public education and enforcement.

The Office of Policy Development and Research is responsible for conducting “reliable and objective” housing market research to citizens and providing analysis of these figures to inform policy making decisions. Greene’s role as assistant secretary, if confirmed, would include oversight of grants and research agreements, as well as budget matters.

The White House press release provided a succinct summary of Greene’s resume. The now-New York City resident began his undergraduate education at Stanford University before receiving a master’s degree in city planning from the University of California Berkeley and finally earning a juris doctor degree from Yale Law School.

Currently Solomon works as a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, a non-profit research organization, where he conducts research on fair and affordable housing, land use, and recovery in cities, to name a few topics. Before that, Greene served as a senior advisor for HUD, where he developed policies to reduce segregation and expand neighborhood choice. He went on to be HUD’s chief advisor for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Greene also spent time as a senior program office at Open Society Foundations, an adjunct professor for NYU’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and a law clerk for Hon. Dorothy W. Nelson on the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The list goes on, but it’s safe to say you couldn’t speak of all of his qualifications in one breath.
