When Brian Bonesteel looks across Green Acres Golf Course, he sees much more than fairways, greens and a place to play nine holes.

The owner sees nearly a decade’s worth of meticulous work.

He sees a public golf course transformed through investment, attention to detail and a vision that has always been about creating a better experience for everyone who walks through the gates.

Now, the latest chapter in that transformation has arrived with the opening of Acres Bar & Grill, a new food and beverage destination designed not only for golfers finishing a round, but for the entire Kingston community.

The new bar and grill, operated by Bonesteel’s wife Tammy and daughter Raegan brings a new social element to Green Acres, offering food, drinks, sports on televisions and an expansive 3,200-square-foot outdoor gathering space overlooking the course.

The goal from the beginning, Bonesteel said, was simple: create a place where people want to stay long after the final putt drops.

“It’s a golf course with basically a little awesome pub. It’s fantastic,” he added.

Tammy and daughter Raegan have taken the lead in developing the food truck restaurant, creating a menu that goes well beyond traditional golf-course fare.

Guests can choose from smash burgers, chicken sandwiches, jumbo hot dogs, fresh salads, wraps and other casual favorites while enjoying drinks on the patio overlooking the course.

Raegan recently left her decades-long career in neuroscience in Boston, returning to Kingston to help launch Acres Bar & Grill alongside her mother. Her decision turned the restaurant into a true family venture, with three generations now helping shape the next chapter of Green Acres.

For Bonesteel, having his family involved has made the expansion especially meaningful.

“It’s a generational thing,” he said. “It’s a family-run business and it now just got a little more family-run,” he added with a laugh. “I couldn’t be more excited about it.”

For Bonesteel, the restaurant is much more than another amenity. It represents the latest step in a nearly decade-long effort to redefine Green Acres, a public nine-hole course that for years carried an underserved reputation among golfers; all this prior to Bonesteel’s ownership and overall tutelage.

“There were plenty of nicknames over the years,” Bonesteel said with a laugh, recalling labels such as “Easy Acres” and “the cow pasture.” “People don’t call it that anymore. In fact, quite the opposite.”

When Bonesteel purchased the property nearly 10 years ago, he wasn’t interested in creating an exclusive country club. Instead, he envisioned a welcoming public golf course where anyone — from beginners to longtime players — could enjoy quality conditions without paying private-club prices.

“I just wanted to provide a great golf course that the average Joe can come and play without having to be a member,” Bonesteel said.

That philosophy has guided years of improvements throughout the property. Greens have been rebuilt, ponds and new drainage systems have been dug, landscaping upgraded, practice areas enhanced and facilities modernized, with each project aimed at making Green Acres a destination rather than simply a place to just play nine holes.

“It’s about giving people a reason to come here,” he said. “Whether they’re playing golf, having dinner or meeting friends, we want them to enjoy themselves.”

The newest improvements extend beyond the new restaurant and bar.

A 6,000-square-foot putting green is nearing completion adjacent to the patio and will feature lighting, allowing golfers and visitors to continue practicing and socializing into the evening. Bonesteel envisions people gathering after work, watching games on multiple televisions, enjoying food and drinks or participating in theme nights such as burger nights and wing nights.

He hopes Acres Bar & Grill becomes a neighborhood destination more so than a typical golf course bar.

Looking back, Bonesteel said changing public perception has been among his proudest accomplishments.

“We changed the whole complexion and the whole perception of Green Acres,” he said. “Now when somebody talks about our course, it’s with admiration and respect.”

For Bonesteel, however, the work is far from finished.

The opening of Acres Bar & Grill is not the finish line. It’s simply the latest expression of a vision that has guided Green Acres from the beginning: create an affordable, welcoming place with great golf, good food and a strong sense of community.

So, for Bonesteel, the work at Green Acres may never truly be finished. The ideas keep coming faster than the projects can be completed — a reality he acknowledges with a laugh.

“I have more ideas to bring to this place than I have years to live,” he said.
