Nestled in the heart of the Rondout neighborhood at 99-101 Broadway, the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History — once a working-class bakery run by Jewish immigrant families — has emerged as a vibrant cultural hub that celebrates the diversity and resilience of Hudson Valley immigrants.

Curated by Kira Manso Brown, the center welcomes visitors to its latest art exhibition, Boundless Creativity, now in its third edition. The show features the work of four immigrant artists who currently live in the Hudson Valley: John Porritt, Nadia Sablin, Jayoung Yoon and Ishraq Zraikat. Originally from England, Russia, Korea and Jordan, respectively.

With a thoughtfully curated mix of media and styles, the works on display don’t just reference issues of national identity and heritage — they transcend them. As the Reher Center notes, the exhibition is about “intersections of heritage, international experience, and contemporary expression.” In other words: “Creativity knows no bounds — like the human spirit, creativity moves freely across borders, shaping and reshaping our shared world.”

The exhibition’s gallery hours make it accessible to a broad audience: Wednesday 1-5 p.m.; Friday 1-6 p.m.; Saturday 1-3 p.m. then 3:30–6 p.m.; and Sunday 12:30–5 p.m., running through Dec. 16.

But the Reher Center offers more than just art. The building itself is a historic artifact. For nearly a century, two generations of the Reher family operated a kosher bakery from the storefront at 101 Broadway — serving bread, canned goods, and community conversation to largely working-class immigrant and laboring families in the surrounding Rondout neighborhood.

Today, the center preserves not only the artifacts and physical space of that bakery, but also the memory of community, belonging, and shared immigrant experience. Through gallery exhibitions like Boundless Creativity, oral histories, and museum tours, the Reher Center connects the legacy of the past with the ongoing stories of new immigrants to the Hudson Valley.

“Boundless Creativity has been a really monumental exhibit for us in terms of bringing the community together,” said Michael Grosso, tour specialist for the museum. “Specially now, it's very important that we recognize the work that immigrants bring to our communities,”
