Post Office Park, the city’s newest greenspace, is open following a two-year design and construction effort. The park, which is actually two separate spaces on either side of Prince Street, is the final piece in a years-in-the-making overhaul of Midtown’s Broadway Corridor.

The park was conceived as part of a plan to redesign the intersection of Broadway, Prince and Grand streets to improve safety and traffic flow. In 2019, the city acquired a parcel of land adjacent to Dallas Hot Weiners II on the east side of Grand Street to facilitate the new design. The site was formerly home to the city’s main post office, built in 1911, demolished in 1969 and replaced with a fast-food restaurant as part of the city’s Urban Renewal scheme.

In 2021, crews demolished the Planet Wings on the site as well as a municipal parking lot on the opposite side of Grand Street. When construction of the new intersection was complete in 2022, planning and design on the new parks began. In 2023, the city began an outreach effort to solicit ideas for the new park and launched an online poll to choose a new name. Last year, OCS Industries began work on the park based on a design by local firm KaN. Over the summer, crews laid down concrete pathways finished with a glow-in-the-dark coating. The second phase of the construction began last month during winter planting season when crew installed trees, laid sod and installed bases for infrastructure, including a sculpture commissioned to pay homage to the old post office.

Mayor Steve Noble said the final phase of the work will take place in the spring and include installation of benches, bike racks, a ping-pong table and picnic tables. A ribbon cutting for the park is expected to take place in mid-May with installation of the sculpture set for the following month.
