Two inmates and a corrections officer were injured in separate incidents at the Ulster County Jail back in August. The violence was first reported by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office in a series of press releases issued on Friday.

The first incident occurred on Aug. 17 when, deputies say, inmate Luis M. Gonzales-Lopez, 27, of Ellenville got into a fight with a 26-year-old inmate wielding a plastic food tray as a weapon in the melee. Police say the victim suffered an injury to his arm and was treated by medical staff at the jail. Gonzales-Lopez was charged with felony counts of assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. He remains in jail awaiting disposition of the case.

Another violent episode occurred three days later on Aug. 20 when, deputies say, Michael Ector, 62, got into an altercation with a 33-year-old fellow inmate and bashed him with a wooden brush handle. The victim suffered a head injury and was transported to HealthAlliance Hospital for treatment. Ector is charged with two felony counts of assault and one felony count of criminal possession of a weapon. He remains jailed awaiting a court date.

That same day, around 8 a.m., deputies say inmate Anthony Carappoli of Kingston left his cell, went to a desk and began destroying computers and other equipment used by corrections staff to communicate and control the unit. When a corrections officer attempted to intervene, deputies say Carappoli attacked them using a jagged 11-inch-long piece of wood broken off the desk. The melee continued until members of the jail’s Emergency Response Team arrived to subdue Carappoli. The corrections officer suffered injuries in the attack and was transported to HealthAlliance Hospital for treatment.

On Aug. 29, an Ulster County grand jury handed up an indictment charging Carappoli with felony counts of first-degree attempted assault, second-degree assault and criminal mischief. On Sept. 13, Carappoli was arraigned on the charges and remanded back to the jail with no bail.
