Navy Veteran Vince Brennan of Saugerties has been named Ulster County's Veteran of the Month for September. A decorated war veteran who served in the Navy and dedicated many years to the community, Vince has called Saugerties home his entire life.

Vince, a native of Saugerties, decided to enlist during the Vietnam War. He had initially intended to join the Marine Corps, but when a recruiter was unavailable, the Navy recruiter stepped in, and Vince found himself headed to boot camp just three days later.

Vince, trained as an aviation electrician, was assigned to VA 172 Attack Squadron in Florida. There, he labored diligently on A4C Skyhawks — light attack aircraft extensively utilized during the war. After a year, he embarked aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt aircraft carrier, setting sail for Vietnam. It was a trying year, as Vince’s unit encountered fierce combat and suffered grievous losses, including that of their commanding officer. After four years of dedicated service, Vince bid farewell to the Navy, departing with the rank of E-5 Aviation Electrician, 2nd Class Petty Officer.

Vince worked for Lehigh Concrete Manufacturing for over two decades before joining the Village of Saugerties Highway Department, where he later became a water filtration plant operator. Vince dedicated 17 years of service to the village. He and his wife, Sharon, raised two children, Michael and Christine. Michael, a New York State Trooper, and Christine, who relocated to South Carolina, are now raising four grandchildren.

Vince actively contributes to the community, having served in the VFW for 58 years (including a term as Past Commander) and the American Legion for 33 years. He also holds the positions of Life Member and Vice President of the Centerville Fire Company, having previously served as a Commissioner.
