Two Capitol Hill lawmakers, U.S. Reps. Marc Molinaro and Jasmine Crockett, are pushing for more to be done to support the disabled community, including increasing federal procurement of goods and services produced by people with disabilities.

In a letter to the House Administration Committee, Reps. Marc Molinaro, (R-NY-19), and Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, called for greater efforts to comply with the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act, which requires the federal government to use its purchasing power to support the employment of people with disabilities.

“At its core, AbilityOne is an employment program,” Molinaro said in a statement. “Full compliance with the Javits-Wagner O’Day Act means more demand for AbilityOne products and more opportunities for individuals with disabilities.”

The Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act requires the federal government to use its purchasing power to support the employment of people with disabilities.

According to the lawmakers, the AbilityOne Commission, which partners with SourceAmerica and National Industries for the Blind to maintain a list of products and services provided by Americans with disabilities that the federal government is required to evaluate before procuring any product or service to see if it meets their needs, is working to promote its products in the House Supply Store.

Reps. Molinaro and Crockett also said that the AbilityOne Commission should be required to appoint an AbilityOne Representative tasked with overseeing AbilityOne procurement and that data on procurement be released on a regular basis.

“Congress has made a commitment to support full employment opportunity for Americans with disabilities,” Crockett said in a statement. “Today, we are taking an important step in turning words into action.”
