This year’s Old Dutch Church cemetery tour will present the Burning of Kingston from a new perspective — through the eyes of five women who survived the 1777 catastrophe. The ninth season of the annual historic re-enactment in Uptown Kingston will run on every Saturday in October at 7 p.m. in the graveyard of the Old Dutch Church at 272 Wall St.

Each October, the Theatre of the Road company puts on a “living history” event at the church using actors to portray some of the cemetery’s residents and other famous Kingstonians. Scripts are written and costumes designed with painstaking attention to historical detail. Visitors are the ushered through the cemetery to hear the voices of the long dead recount events long past. Over the years, the company has portrayed historic figures ranging from Revolutionary War hero and New York’s first governor, George Clinton, to bootlegger Legs Diamond, who once ran a brewery in Kingston.

The company has taken on the burning of Kingston before. But this year, Theatre of the Road’s Frank Marquette said the company wanted to highlight the experiences of women who too often get short shrift in history.

“This is our third time with the Burning of Kingston, but we’ve always done the Revolutionary War heroes, the generals, the judges and business leaders,” said Marquette. “This year we’re going to get the women’s perspective.”

In collaboration with a team of writers and researchers, Marquette produced scripts that tell the story of five women, Patriots and Loyalists alike. There’s Becky Low, a farmer who gave shelter to a British spy; Cornelia Tappan Clinton, wife of George Clinton and an advocate for building in Kingston; and Maria DeWitt, whose mill provided food for the town. There’s also Elizabeth Wynkoop, a Kingston woman left embittered by the deaths of relatives in the war. A fifth character, Dian, is a composite based on the enslaved women of the Van Gaasbeck family who will tell visitors what she overheard during the first meeting of New York’s State Senate.

“Very few people know that slavery was legal here until 1828,” said Marquette of the decision to highlight the experiences of enslaved Kingstonians. “We were never taught that and so we never got their perspective on what it was like during the era when the country was growing. We just associate slavery with the Southern states and it’s just not true.”

The graveyard tour also presents the viewpoints of women who remained loyal to the crown and those simply fed up with the war and its associated sacrifices. As keepers of hearth and home, as well as proprietors of family farms and businesses while men were away fighting, Marquette said the Burning of Kingston was a particularly cruel blow to women on both sides of the conflict.

“The men were celebrating the victory in the battle of Saratoga while the women were losing their husbands and their men after having done all the work and farm work themselves, storing grain and preparing for the winter and all of that was lost in addition to their homes.”

This year, the cemetery tour will coincide with the city’s commemoration of the Oct.13-15 Burning of Kingston. As part of the event, the tour will be free and open to the public that week. Other showings will be $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Children under 12 will be admitted free. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.livinghistoryny.com.
