Theatre on the Road will produce and stage the dramatic play Dracula at the Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale on Thursday, Sept. 28 and Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.

Written by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston, the play, which first premiered on Broadway in 1927, has been described by Newsweek as “as evening of high-class fun.” The play is based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel of the same name.

The Rosendale-based troupe staged Dracula in the old mine last year; all performances sold out.

Director Frank Marquette sets the scene: “Lucy, whose father is in charge of an English asylum, has been attacked by a mysterious illness. Dr. Van Helsing believes Lucy is the victim of a vampire — a certain Count Dracula. Renfield, an inmate, suffers from delusions and is under the spell of the Count. Will he be found and finally laid to rest?”

“I can’t think of a better marriage of play and location,” Marquette added. “Who wouldn’t like to experience Dracula live? I’m setting this in the 1920s with period costumes and making full use of the spooky wonders of the Widow Jane Mine.”

The cast features a roster of accomplished actors all of whom live and work in the Hudson Valley. They include David Smilo as Dracula, Michelle Kafel as Van Helsing, Joe Maxwell as Jonathan Harker, Dan Anderson as Dr. Seward, David Britton as Renfield, Heather Roland-Bianco as Lucy, Ellen Pavloff as Miss Wells and Frank Marquette as Butterworth. Sue Regan will stage manage. Kristen Marquette, Theatre on the Road’s co-owner, will provide costumes and styling.
