As we grow more excited for Spring, our minds may linger over our own gardens and what we aim to cultivate this year. Perhaps we’ve already started cataloging our seeds, and making notes. One of the best ways to diversify your seed collection is a seed swap, and there’s a wonderful one coming up — the Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Seed Swap on Sunday, March 19, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their Ulster County location, 232 Plaza Road (Hannaford Plaza), in Kingston.

You can share seeds you’ve harvested from your own plants, or viable seeds you no longer care to grow.

Here’s a handy list of seeds and how many seasons they are viable:

1 year: onions, parsnips, parsley, spinach, Anemone, Aster, Begonia’ Chives, Coneflower, Coreopsis, Delphinium, Larkspur, Nigella, Pansy, Phlox, Salvia, Vinca, Viola

2 years: corn, peas, beans, chives, okra, dandelion, Ageratum, Baby’s breath, Candytuft, Clarkia, Columbine, Coreopsis, Cyclamen, Dahlia, Dusty miller, Four o’clock, Foxglove, Gaillardia, Impatiens, Lisanthus, Lupin, Marigold, Nicotiana, Penstemon, Petunia, Portulaca, Rue, Statice, Strawflower, Tithonia

They ask that you bring your extra seeds in envelopes, zip lock bags, or original seed packages, labeled with the type, variety, and any helpful growing instructions (they have extra envelopes if needed, including for any seeds you take home.)

No seeds to swap? No problem! They are asking for a 50 cent (cash only) donation for each pack you take, and the Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.

The event is free — and great fun for the whole family — but since space is limited, they ask that folks interested in attending register here.
