The film of the hit Broadway musical “Come From Away,” about 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them, is this month’s Movies With Spirit screening at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 18 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 22 Livingston St. in Kingston.

The show was filmed live on Broadway after theater performances were allowed to resume in 2021 following the pandemic shutdown. The musical drama comedy, with an ensemble cast, recounts a week starting Sept. 11, 2001, when 38 planes, carrying some 7,000 passengers, were ordered to land in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, population 11,000, after the Federal Aviation Administration closed U.S. airspace right after the terrorist attacks.

As residents of the town graciously welcomed the “come from aways,” the passengers and locals alike processed what happened while finding love, laughter and new hope in the unlikely and lasting bonds that they forged.

The film, which received universal acclaim on the Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic review-aggregation websites, is rated TV-14. Its trailer can be found on YouTube at tinyurl.com/ComeFromAway-MoviesWSpirit.

The screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion. Refreshments will be served. Attendees over age 12 are asked to contribute $10 a person. Movies With Spirit screenings comply with all federal, state and local health and safety protocols, including those of the screening venues.

The monthly Movies With Spirit series, organized by Gerry Harrington of Kingston, seeks to stimulate people’s sense of joy and wonder, inspire love and compassion, evoke a deepened understanding of people’s integral connection with others and with life itself, and support individual cultures, faith paths and beliefs while simultaneously transcending them.

The films are screened in diverse places of worship and reverence across Ulster and Dutchess counties at 7 p.m. on the third Saturday of every month. Movies With Spirit has no religious affiliation.
