A routine eviction took a dangerous turn on Wednesday, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office said, when a man armed with a stolen handgun barricaded himself in a bathroom as deputies attempted to execute the eviction warrant.

Deputies say the incident took place around 11 a.m. at the Wiltwyck Gardens apartment complex on Albany Avenue when a sheriff’s deputy attempted to serve an eviction warrant on a 59-year-old male resident whom deputies did not identify. When the deputy spoke with the man, the sheriff’s office said, the deputy saw that his belongings were still present in the apartment. Seeing that the man was not ready to leave the premises immediately, as specified in the order issued by Kingston City Court, the deputy offered to wait while he gathered his things.

Instead, police said, the man walked into another room, grabbed a handgun and fled into a bathroom. The man allegedly threatened to shoot himself and ignored the deputy’s orders to drop the weapon, police said.

While the man remained in the bathroom, the deputy called for backup. Units from the sheriff’s office, Kingston Police Department and Town of Ulster Police responded to the scene and closed traffic on Albany Avenue. Officers on the scene successfully negotiated the man’s surrender and, after 30 minutes, he left the apartment and was taken into custody without incident, deputies said.

Following an investigation, sheriff’s detectives determined that the handgun used the standoff was stolen. Also discovered were two more firearms in the home, deputies said; on Wednesday evening detectives were still looking into the origin of the other firearms.

The man is charged with felony fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree reckless endangerment and obstruction of governmental administration. He was issued an appearance ticket to return to Kingston City Court.

Following processing, deputies said, the man was transported to HealthAlliance Hospital where he was turned over to staff for a mental health evaluation.
