A local distillery is looking to open a tasting room, cocktail lounge and packaging facility in Kingston’s Wilbur neighborhood. Representatives for Wiltwyck Spirits Company appeared before the city’s Planning Board Tuesday night to lay out their vision for the former auto body shop located at the intersection of Wilbur and Greenkill avenues.

Wiltwyck Spirits already operates a distillery in West Park. On Tuesday, company representative Kyran Tompkins told the board that while the space on Wilbur Avenue would include 1,375-square-foot “production space” that would be used for storage, packaging and product testing. No distilling of alcohol would take place at the location. Tompkins said that the new space would not produce wastewater, fermentation smells or other byproducts from the distilling process.

“All of the waste, smells and most of the trucking occurs [at the West Park facility],” said Tompkins.

Another 775 feet of space would be set aside for a tasting room and cocktail lounge featuring a small, all-electric kitchen. Planning documents say the lounge will be open Fridays from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturdays from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Sundays from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. with two to four employees on duty each day. The space will also feature a fenced-in stone patio for outdoor seating.

According to the company’s site plan application, Wiltwyck Spirits Co. is a majority woman-owned business operated by four local residents with roots in the Hudson Valley. The cocktail lounge, the application said, is part of a growing craft spirits industry that has successfully leveraged Ulster County’s emergence as a center for agribusiness and agritourism.

“Wiltwyck Spirits Company sought to place its forward-facing operation specifically inside the City of Kingston,” the application reads. “Kingston [is a city with] with a rich history and expansive artist community and strong support of local makers. A craft spirits distillery and production space would be a great fit to complement the several existing breweries.”

Planning board officials said because the proposed site was on a state highway and part of the Empire State Trail, the application would need to be referred to the Ulster County Planning Board. Company representatives are expected to return to the Kingston Planning Board next month for possible approval. Tompkins told the board that plans call for the production space and cocktail lounge to be up and running by late spring or early summer.
