New York Attorney General Letitia James issued a warning to New Yorkers on Wednesday, January 11, about the recent rise in mail theft. Checks, credit cards, financial documents, and even whole mailboxes have been reported stolen, which can lead to identity theft, deed theft, and invasions of financial privacy.

Attorney General James passed along recommendations from the United States Postal Service (USPS) to protect against these federal crimes.

“Stealing mail is a violation of privacy, it is a federal crime, and it causes real problems,” said Attorney General James. “I urge everyone to remain vigilant, and to protect themselves, their information, and their mail by following our important tips.”

USPS advises customers to:

Pick up your mail promptly - don’t leave it overnight
Have trusted neighbors or friends pick up important financial mail if you are unavailable
If you don’t receive expected financial mail, contact the issuing agency right away
Notify your post office to hold your mail if you’ll be out of town or transfer it if you change your address

USPS also provides Informed Delivery service so you can track mail and packages via email.

If you suspect your mail has been stolen, USPS recommends contacting the police immediately, then reporting the theft to postal inspectors by calling 877-876-2455.

Any sticky substances, like glue or tape, on your mailbox should also be reported to your post office, postal inspectors or the New York Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which can be reached at 212-330-2400.

If you believe your personal information has been stolen, Attorney General James recommends monitoring your credit so you are aware of any changes made. You can also place a credit freeze or fraud alert on your account.
