The new solar panels on the roof of Midtown’s Andy Murphy Neighborhood Center will generate enough power to handle the building’s electrical needs, and put a little back in the grid to boot.

A gathering was held Wednesday at the Broadway community center to announce that the array, designed to meet 110 percent of the building’s needs, is fully operational.

The 110-panel system was installed by Sun Common and went live on Aug. 24. Since the installation, city officials say the array has saved 8,716 pounds of carbon dioxide, which is the equivalent of 65 trees planted. City officials can keep tabs on the system via the smartphone app SolarEdge.

“In celebration of Hudson Valley Climate Solutions Week, we are thrilled to announce that, in the City of Kingston, we are taking real, concrete actions to combat climate change and our local impact on the environment,” said Mayor Steve Noble. “With 100 percent renewable electricity at one of our most utilized city buildings, this is a great first step toward lessening our overall impact and setting a standard for the community.”

The mayor thanked NYSERDA (the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority), the city Parks & Recreation Department, the Climate Smart Kingston Commission and “and all those who helped us make this building self-sustaining for generations to come.”

“This is just the first of many initiatives that we will be rolling out in the near and medium term to divest from fossil fuels in the City,” Kingston Environmental Education & Sustainability Coordinator Julie Noble said. “We must start with our own buildings first, to walk the walk, and that’s exactly what we did here. This location is front and center for all to see, and incidentally, also one of our largest consumers. Hand in hand, we are also prioritizing energy efficiency in our buildings, to be sure we are being the best environmental stewards while also saving money.”

A grant from NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Communities Program funded the project, with additional support approved by the Kingston Common Council to match grant funds.

The Andy Murphy Center is the first city-owned building to achieve 100 percent renewable energy status. Several municipal buildings have smaller systems, including two ground-mounted systems at the Forsyth Nature Center and two community solar projects — one in partnership with Pointe of Praise Church, the other on Albany Avenue with partner Radio Kingston. The city in its 2030 Climate Action Plan set a goal of 100 percent renewable energy in municipal operations by 2030.
