Earlier this week, we sent our intern, Alex Ober, into the streets to ask people a very important question — what’s been your favorite song of this summer and why?

Baruch: “I’d say ‘Roller Derby Star’ because it’s a song that I did not expect to enjoy but I really took a liking to it after being introduced to it by my mentor, Jason Bowman. But, new Black Midi came out and a song off that album ‘Eat Man Eat’ really hit home. It’s a song about the horrors of war, and running away from them with wine in your heart. It’s beautiful and I appreciate the queer energy brought by the band’s vocalist. It really hit home for me.”

Olive Milford: “My song this summer that has been playing in my car nonstop has been ‘Chivalry Is Not Dead’ by Hiatus Kaiyote. I just really like the energy of it. It’s really fun. Another song that I really liked this summer is ‘Leak Water’ by the band Bent Knee. I like it because it has an intense emotional quality while having very abstract lyrics and very cool harmonies along with it. But also, it feels like a song that I can feel through my chest which is really interesting and unique to their songs and style which is very alternative. So that’s what I have been listening to this summer.”

Catherine Meringolo: “I've been listening to a lot of James Blake lately. It’s just really chill but he’s got some songs that are a little more upbeat also.”

Ruben: “I think it might be ‘Moscow Mule’ by Bad Bunny. I’m from Puerto Rico, I’m just here on vacation. I’m not really a fan of Bad Bunny but that’s the song that's really hype and happy. I’m not a fan of his music most of the time, but it plays and I just vibe to it.”

Lina: “Right now I’ve been listening nonstop to Angel Olsen’s new album. It’s called ‘Big Time’ and they have songs called ‘Big Time’ and ‘All The Good Times.’ I’ve pretty much been having those on repeat, but I’ve had the whole album in general on repeat. For that artist it was mostly about them coming out and just changing and them losing their parent. It’s similar to the feelings I’ve had. Even though it’s sad, it’s country but it’s not country. You know how they say sad music makes your sadness go away? I think it just does that.”

Masha Badinter: “I’m going to have to go with an album. It’s ‘Music Has The Right To Children’ by Boards of Canada. It’s really chill and relaxing and usually I like fast and loud music but this has just been calm and cool. It’s just good for spacing out and cooking, hanging out in the backyard.”

Florian: “It’s called ‘Tschu Tschu Wa’ — it’s a German song. It’s actually a children's song and my son here loves it, so it brings happiness.”
