After he allegedly stole a both Mercedes and a minivan on New Year’s Eve, the long arm of the law finally caught up with a Kingston man in Albany, Ulster County sheriff’s deputies said.

According to detectives at the sheriff’s office, at about 4:10 p.m. on Dec. 31, they began looking for a 2014 Mercedes Benz from a gas station in the Town of Esopus. The car was soon spotted on South Wall Street; after it hit an unoccupied parked vehicle, deputies said the suspect, James L. Henry III, fled on foot to a nearby convenience store, where he allegedly stole a 2014 Chrysler Town and County minivan.

Authorities were able to track the minivan to Albany, deputies said, where police there found it — with Henry still in the driver’s seat. He was arrested without incident and taken back to Ulster County for arraignment.

The 36-year-old Henry was charged with two counts of felony fourth-degree grand larceny, the misdemeanor of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and the traffic violations of speeding and leaving the scene of a property damage motor vehicle accident.

Deputies said Henry has two previous felony convictions and was “under supervision by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision” at the time of the incident.

He was arraigned in Esopus Town Court and sent to Ulster County Jail without bail.
