Mouth-watering works of art are coming to Uptown Kingston this Friday in the form of luscious oil paintings inspired by your favorite desserts. Local artist and roller derby queen Audrey Brand will showcase her sweet tooth at the “Piece of Cake” art show at Sweet Maresa's on Wall Street, 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 8, in a series of works based on the popular shop’s cake slices and macarons.

Brand, who has lived in the Hudson Valley for more than a decade and has a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from SUNY New Paltz, said she’s long appreciated the artistry in Maresa Volante’s desserts.

“Her process seems inherently devoted to the divinity of treat-ly indulgence,” said Brand. “From the meticulous ornamentation of the goodies themselves to the enchanting photos on the bakery Instagram, where even the captions are like little poems: ‘Cupcakes still have their place in this world.’ ‘Happy first birthday, Bakery. I love you.’ Every one of her creations is a work of art.”

Brand started painting cakes when she was inspired by iconic pop artist Wayne Thiebaud, who’s known for his colorful works of pies, candies and pastries. He achieved his signature “heavy pigment” method by painting with a knife, as if he were frosting his own cakes.

Brand uses a similar method. “Through this practice of icing the canvas, I gained an appreciation for the artistry in patisserie as well as the confection in painting. It also deepened my understanding of myself as an artist,” she said.

Brand and Volante had talked about doing an art show together this year, after Brand finished her first cake painting last December, a month after Wayne Thiebaud’s 100th birthday. “At the time it seemed like an easy enough endeavor,” said Brand. “And although the months that followed turned out to be less of a cakewalk than expected, I kept thinking of Wayne and how painting cakes must be the secret to living to 100. I’m going to paint 100 cakes. I’m going to live forever. Piece of cake.”

Indulge your sweet tooth this Friday, at the opening of “Piece of Cake” at Sweet Maresa's, 291 Wall St., in Uptown Kingston. Brand will have paintings and prints for sale, with edible desserts to match.
