A cyclist was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a vehicle in Uptown Kingston.

According to the police, the crash occurred around 8:11 p.m. July 20 on Washington Avenue near the Dutch Village apartment complex. Police say the victim, a 57-year-old Albany resident, was riding with a group of cyclists when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Washington Avenue. According to police, when officers arrived on the scene they discovered the victim was pinned under the vehicle.

Officers rendered first aid and called in the Kingston Fire Department and Mobile Life ambulance services. Police said efforts were made to extricate the victim from under the vehicle, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

No arrests were made or tickets issued at the scene but the incident remains under investigation by the Ulster County Crash Reconstruction Team. KPD Detective Lt. Brian Robertson said the preliminary investigation did not reveal any criminal wrongdoing on the part of the driver.

“It doesn’t look like anyone was drunk or going 100 miles per hour,” said Robertson. “We’re waiting for the final word [from the crash reconstruction team] but right now it looks like an accident.”

Kingston police were assisted at the scene by state police, sheriff’s deputies, Town of Ulster Police and members of the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.

Police did not identify the victim, but local cycling advocate and bike safety educator Rose Quinn said he was her partner, John “Host” Lynch. Quinn said Lynch worked at a food co-op in Albany and lived with her part-time in Kingston.

Quinn described Lynch as a dedicated lifelong cyclist who had never held a driver’s license. She added that he was a “strong, confident rider.”

Tuesday’s incident is the second fatal crash involving a cyclist struck by a vehicle in Kingston in less than a year. On Nov. 4, 2020, 54-year-old Daryl Savage was killed when he struck the side of a school bus while passing through the intersection of Greenkill and Wilber avenues. Savage was riding in a bike lane that had just been installed by the State Department of Transportation as part of the Empire State Trail system.

A lawsuit filed by Savage’s family claims the bike lane was poorly designed and that city and state officials did not do enough to warn drivers and cyclists about the new traffic pattern.
